A review of The Scottish Bowler Fellowship by Allan Mitchell written on Thursday 23rd of June 2011
Sir/Madam
I just want to put a suggestion to you in regards to past bowlers who are still alive but no longer take part in the game or there clubs due to health problems, I am referring to people with Dementia. The Scottish Football Association along with Alzheimer Scotland are bringing together past supporters of football clubs with dementia to get together in small groups to talk about there past and bring photos ect of the teams they support ie groups of Motherwell supporters would meet old friends with the same problem and talk about the old times this helps keep them active and gives them an interest, it also gives there carers a break. What I am suggesting is that Bowling clubs who have members or past members with Dementia and due to this no longer take part in club activities and are somewhat forgotten.
It would be up the clubs involved to find out how many have this illness, and get an idea of how many in each area there are, once this is known a venue could be found and once a week old bowlers could get together to talk about old times and feel part of the system.
If I could be fed this information I would take it foreword with the help of Alzheimer's Scotland.
I am a bowler myself and play for the Northern BC in Edinburgh, I am writing as an individual and not through my club.
I would appreciate your thoughts on this.
Yours in Sport
Allan Mitchell
