A review of Springboig St Johns School by Ricky Latta written on Tuesday 23rd of July 2013
Was in the Johns fro 78 to 80. Have great memory's of the place did all my work in the painters being taught by Mr Lesley Mc Dermot who hailed from East Kilbride. I hated stripping all those benches off the old varnish then re-staining them for the new chapel that had just been built by the boys for use by us and staff. If I remember right there was 3 house units mine being Colombia the other 2 were Ogilvie and Melrose what a laugh we used to have in the dorms at night when the staff were away and it was only the old watchy on night duty. Remember the swimming pool we had what a laugh we had in there. haha, then there was the Passion play we put on for our family's great day that was with Eddie Brogan playing Jesus Christ and me being a Roman soldier. Some of the staff I remember are Jack Gargan a mad Yorkshire man who was the Headmaster and his side kick big Mersey then Mr Arnold the American or so he though who used to try teach us baseball on the grass across from the workshops wee Begley who we used to call the bulb likes a wee swally lol big Joe Scanlon the staff member who had the honour of taking me to the panel to be release. My best moment was running away with a guy called Jim McGuire who I think came from Airdrie we were ment to be helping in the kitchen with the wee Chinese cook we called wee Joe cut a long story short we bolted out the kitchen out the school front door down the back path and off, I was on the shoot for 3 weeks and was down Manchester when I was caught and returned to the Johns via a children's home in Manchester and a plane ride to Glasgow airport were I was meet by the bulb who asked if I enjoyed my flight haha. Sad to hear the Johns is now shut. Anyone remember me get in touch lattaricky@gmail.com or try find me on Facebook. .
