A review of Alexandra Parade Primary School by Janette Hunter Leonard written on Saturday 26th of July 2014
What a disappointing reception I received. Standing from the street, we two well dressed and totally respectable citizens of Australia snapped several photographs of my old primary school to take home to Australia to show my children - not for a minute did I feel that I was breaking any rules! Imagine my absolute surprise and horror when the school seemed to go into lock down and we were being viewed suspiciously from several windows in the building. Eventually a staff member obviously felt brave enough to leave the premises to warn us that we were illegally taking photographs. I anxiously tried to explain the circumstances and apologised for any breaches in protocol. The staff member was adamant that we move on forthwith as our presence near the school was unwelcome.
What a sad day in my life and may I say what a missed opportunity for Alexandra Parade School. There was no hand of friendship offered to an ex-pupil who may well have had an interesting life and story to tell. I would have dearly loved to be invited in and perhaps sign the visitors book. I wrote to the school when I arrived back in Australia describing my experience and received a cool response. So much for childhood memories!.
