I received a 'something for you' card recently with my address, but a name slightly different from my own; the equivalent of L. Richardson instead of L. Donaldson. I wasn't sure if I was due any parcels and the name really threw me so I dialled the number on the card 03456 021 021 and managed to get through to someone with a query (after listening to about 5 minutes of inane and useless information which was pretty much exactly what I could read on the card).
I explained the situation to the person on the phone and asked whether there could have been a mistake and if they could check for me. The woman made me feel very small and stupid when she explained that there was 'no way' any of the posties could have made a mistake on these cards as they copied the details 'directly off the parcel'. I apologised for making assumptions, but still thought that it would be east enough to read one name and write another, especially as these cards are written by hand by someone with a million things on their mind. The woman then started to be pretty curt telling me that she was sure there was no mistake and I should just let the parcel get returned to the sender.
I asked if there was anyway they could get someone to check the parcel to make sure there was no mistake, but she told me she could not contact the delivery office and there is no phone number for them (this call centre can get in touch with the delivery office as I have just left a complaint which will be passed down to them). She said I could take the card to the delivery office in person, but most likely I would not get the parcel as I wouldn't have ID for the correct name. She really talked down to me and was very patronising about this, which just frustrates me and makes me feel stupid.
Luckily, I got another 'something for you' card a couple of days later (delivered while both me and my flatmate were in the house, hmm.) and I have just been to collect this parcel and I took the original card with me as well just to check. Of course, both parcels were for me with my name written clearly on them. This leaves me a little annoyed with my postperson's lack of attention to detail, but more frustrated with the customer service who treated me like an idiot and made me doubt myself, when I was in the right the whole time.
I wonder how many other people have experienced the same confusion and let a parcel for them be returned to sender causing unnecessary stress, confusion and delays..
