A review of St Francis Nursing Home by John Mullen written on Sunday 19th of April 2015
I was born at St Francis in 1964 and a childhood friend who was a neighbour of my parents was born there a month later. A guy that I worked with was born there too (around 1953 I think). Apparently Paul Coia, the Radio and TV personality was also born in the same place.
I visited back in 1996 when it was being converted back to the original large villas and still have one of the tiles from one of the staircases somewhere. They have done a nice job of making the buildings look as they were in the past, although it is individual flats within each villa now. I believe that some people are under the impression the building was demolished, but that is not the case. The original villas were simply connected together by builders and the internal walls removed as required.
I also read somewhere that the delivery room was known as 'Bethlehem,' but have no way of confirming this. If anyone has a look in Merryland Street now, I was told by the developers in 1996, that the delivery room is the one on the ground floor with the long bay window.
I also heard back then, that historical medical records definitely still exist, but the location is uncertain. There is a modern old folks home at the end of the road now with the same name, so that could be a starting point for those who may wish to investigate further.
Best Wishes to all!.
