A review of Holy Cross R C Primary School by Jim McKenna written on Tuesday 15th of September 2015
I attended Holy Cross Primary 1963-70 first in Daisy St, after that St.Brigid's in Toryglen & Batson St then finally Calder St.my class seemed to be always on the move during that period until passing the dreaded 11-plus exams to get to Holyrood Secondary.I can only remember a few of the teachers.Miss Campbell (my first teacher), Mrs McCarton (?-headmistress?), Mr.Travers (Head), Mrs Collins (hard but fair!) and the dreaded Mr.Collins as mentioned elsewhere by others!
However, my favourite teacher at Holy Cross was Mrs Shanks.an absolute gem of a woman & a great teacher who apart from other things got me into playing musical instruments, gardening (she encouraged us all to grow tomato plants!) and, er, yoghurt!.I was a bit of a 'bad-lad' at school but she did more than anyone else to convince me that getting a good education was essential and did so without bashing it into me, which was a pleasant change!
Does anyone remember "the huts" at the bottom of Prospecthill Rd/Aikenhead Rd that is now a police station?
That used to be Holyrood boy's annexe for years 1&2.about 8x prefab-style "classrooms" and a coal-bunker with a chimney for the heating boiler.the place was ringed with a fence topped with barbed-wire & from a distance resembled a concentration camp!
Nearly 45 years on, I still see/write some pals that I went through primary & secondary school with.Mark Moble, Gerry Murray, Philip "fossil" Mullen, Marie Dunn, Ross Macfarlane.does anyone remember Paul Clark (Holyrood Sec 1972-75) as I've been trying to get in contact with him too?.Hi to anyone who remembers me!.
