A review of Southern General Hospital by Mary written on Wednesday 18th of November 2015
I had a very unhappy and upsetting experience at the New Southern General Restaurant on Tuesday 17th Nov. I was visiting a patient with terminal cancer and needed to visit the restaurant for some much needed comfort. They were apparently serving hot food. I noticed there was hot soup but there was no one to ask what it was, so I lifted the lid to have a peak. The soup looked slimey and did not smell very good and was definitely not hot. As I replaced the lid the assistant at the till shouted aggressively, something about not being allowed. I looked at other food and saw that it was mostly of a very low standard. I fancied chips but only herbie roasties were available. (No one available to ask.) They smelt a bit funny so I decided to pick one up from the edge. I am glad I did. It was off and very stale, tasted as though it had been cooked the day before or the day before that. Again the girl, Ashleigh, yelled at me and said that now all of the roasties were to be binned. Which to me was a good thing as they were being kept at a very low heat and were only luke warm at best. She obviously didn't want anyone to realise how awful the food was before buying it. At this stage, feeling very upset, there was no kindness or comfort to be had in this restaurant, decided that a cup of tea seemed to be the only option. Where you got the tea was not simple. No instructions or anyone that could help. I spotted the tea bags at the till where Ashleigh was dealing with other customers very impatiently, almost shouting at them. I felt sorry for them as they seemed so miserable. I was almost afraid to approach the till to buy a couple of tea bags, but managed it. She did not help me out as to how you then made the tea, she was unapproachable, rude and very unhelpful.
Finally, after working out where the hot water was and squeezing the last remnants of milk from the jug which would not pour unless you took the top off, we sat down. The tea, however soon chilled and I decided to top it up with some more hot water. This I managed but was immediately shouted at by Ashleigh who was having a chat with other staff who seemed to make an appearance. She shouted, aggressively, that I had to pay for the water. I asked her if she was joking and she continued to shout at me. The water was burning my hands so I just continued to my seat where my friend was in tears about her father's illness. To my astonishment she appeared at our table and said that the water I took had to be paid for but the water over there was free, so could she have the money.
I told her to stop bullying and to go away. She wouldn't do this and just stood there going over the rules etc. Incredible! I had seen other people taking water from the same place. They certainly were not paying for it. It became so overwhelming and upsetting as she was determined to get her 22pence. I just quietly took the tray over to the stacking area with the water and told my friend that I would have to cut our time short and hoped that her father would get better, although we both new he wouldn't. It was difficult as Ashleigh was still standing there insisting on her 22pence..
