A review of Caledonian Travel by Mues written on Tuesday 14th of June 2016
We left on Friday 10th June from Paisley at 9.30am to go to Fort William and Skye for 4 days. A coach from Milligan's picked us up and our journey began. After 3 stops on the way we arrived at The Caledonian Hotel in Fort William. The hotel reception area, dining room and bar have recently been refurbished and are good. The rooms are in great need of attention although clean thanks to the wonderful staff. On Saturday we headed to Skye which is another long journey. We were not aware the we would be DUMPED in Broadford (a one horse town). There was nothing to do or see. Hotel did not start serving meals until 12.30 and we were leaving again at 1.15pm therefore too tight timing to order food. At 1.15pm we left and headed back to the mainland. We were told on Friday by the coach driver that he could not drive us to Fort William on Sunday as this was HIS DAY OFF. So were were left to our own devices to get into town on Sunday when there are only 2 buses each way all day. Taxis into and from town cost from £7 - £9.80 each way using the same taxi company as suggested by the hotel, where we were told it would be £6.
If Caledonian Travel are going to use other coach companies to take THEIR customers then they should be certain that the drivers can do the required driving within there committed driving time and not leave your customers to have to make their owns arrangements. The driver bleated constantly that he was only allowed to drive for a certain number of hours and it was not his fault that he could not fulfill our trips and we should take it up with Caledonian.
My understanding was that this was a trip to Fort William and Skye and therefore we could expect to be taken to both places. Broadford hardly touches Skye and it was expected by most passengers that we would drive the other 25 miles to Portree where at least there would be something open. We also expected that we would at least be dropped and picked up from Fort William on the Sunday especially when there are so few local buses available and not everyone is fit enough to manage public transport..
