A review of St Gerard's R C Secondary School by Tory written on Tuesday 25th of February 2025
They used to call me Tory and Jay-c when I was at St Gerard's from '68 to '71. I remember some exceptional teachers there, like Mr. Abbott in science. He probably knew we weren't destined for Nobel Prizes, but he taught us how to make fishing rods, which really changed our lives. Tam, Sammy, and I would take our new rods to the Barrhead Dams and Loch Libo in Neilston. We never caught anything, but those trips ignited a love for nature in us. I often wonder what happened to Tam and Sammy—I really miss those guys.
Our music teacher was another life-changer, though his name escapes me. One day, he played "Morning" from the Peer Gynt Suite, and it made me feel as if I were in Norway.
Then there was Mr. Blue, the always upbeat PE teacher who made you feel that life was inherently good.
We also had a history teacher who was a real treasure; he could weave stories from novels into his lessons, capturing our undivided attention.
I also remember Mr. Selkirk from tech class. After he left, I spotted him on TV singing folk songs with his wife.
You know this, we never really appreciated how good they were until it was too late.
Take care,
Jim Mc C.
