A review of Maxwell Arms by Dave written on Sunday 23rd of March 2008
Visited here last night as they had went to the trouble of putting on a band and I believe in supporting these establishments. Arrived at 10pm and it was quite busy, but not overly busy at the bar.
However after 10 minutes of trying to get served from 3 (and at one point 4) bar staff I gave up.
Due to the band playing, shouting for a drink was a bit difficult so I waited my turn which came and went. What was so annoying was that the bar staff had clearly seen me but chose to serve their regulars instead who were walking up to the bar and being served right away.
It seems a bit pointless the management putting on entertainment to attract custom (especially new custom, as the regulars will partly live up to their title anyway), when the bar staff seem reluctant to embrace the additional custom.
I popped across the road to the Star Bar. Although just as busy (they had a band also), I was spotted on entering, and when it was my turn to be served was asked for my order. The epitome of bar staff.
I would suggest the Maxwell Rd bar staff, and by results the bar itself, could be improved by additional training to help them do their jobs properly.
Maybe I'll get that pint the next time - whether in a glass or not may depend on how the management deal with (constructive?) criticism! .
