A review of St James (Pollok) Parish Church by Kathleen Docherty written on Wednesday 25th of June 2008
It was Christmas eve at St James's church 1960 i was about 8 yrs old when my 9yr sister and i wanted to go with our gran to the midnight service but were ushered to bed instead.
looking out the window it was snowing heavely
every childs dream of a white Christmas.
we lay there planning our escape with our coats on under the covers then as we had a getaway route
we waited for Gran to go out then our plan was underway.
There we were struggling to open the rusty old metal window frames with very little noise and with great difficulty pitch black and a high drop before we knew it, we were oot yippy i yelled quietly.
so there we were sliding down the hill parents thinking we're asleep. we sat at the back of the church so we could get out fast without anyone
noticing us, who was i kidding? i must have had the brightest scarf round my neck so struggling to take it off, to late, a camers was in my face so i smiled like a cheshire cat and waved happily no giving a thought that that scarf was aboot tae get us intae bother.
nudging my sister to smile she sat with her head down then she giggled we're on the telly. oops so we are.
i giggled this was great am gonna be famous. a wish..
but we still had to get home and in that window before Granny got home.Never thinking that our parents saw us.
so there we were falling up the hill in the snow
and trying to be quiet.some things go to plan
but this time nah, we were caught. just as we put our head through the window there were the parents
waiting for us.asking questions about the service
and us wondering how they knew, as if we did'nt know. we saw yi on the telly my Dad laughed and if it wisny fer that daft bright scarf yi were wearin a might
never have seen yi. Well that night was unforgetable for a long time to come we thought we had it all down to a fine art that no one noticed but most of the street were there we never saw them but gi wis, they all saw us... Anyone in Pollok remember this night? Love to hear from you. Kathleen Docherty
