A review of St Monica's R C Primary School by ALAN JOSEPH MORGAN written on Tuesday 28th of October 2008
I remember starting at St Monica's way back in the early 50's when it first opened for business. Prior to that our primary was 2 or 3 wooden type buildings
sited just down from St. M's. If my memory is accurate I can recall marching up to the new school in two's and being so excited at the prospect of some heat in the class room for a change. Strangly enough the one mark it has left on me, even after all these years, I'm 62 now, is the smell of the newness, whenever I experience that smell I am instantly reminded of that day and pictures come flooding back.
The headmaster was Mr Berry and we had a grand old lady in charge of us infants, for the life of me her name has slipped away, but I recall with my parents in later times meeting her in Rothesay with her tweeds and laced up shoes. I stayed in Sweden for a while in the 70's and returned to visit mum and dad and while home I took the opportunity to visit the old place, strange feeling. Later I went on to Lourdes to finish the rest of my state education and that was like leaving kindergarten and finding yourself in a fully blown factory of hundreds and hundreds, very very different!!.
