A review of The Sir John Stirling Maxwell by Ruth and David written on Sunday 4th of March 2007
This is a mad village pub. It is extremely cheap so it attracts pensioners as well as students in the pub section. Even though the rear is up a few steps, this is the family restaurant section. It is really popular on Sundays where everyone just bumps up their prams. They provide high chairs and even a kids' pack with colouring book and crayons -- all free.
The décor is crap, but at least it is not pretentious. They also do not play rubbish pop music or dim the lights. The staff are slow and there is always a mistake, but it doesn't matter; the drink and food are extremely cheap.
Let your hair down, relax. As a pub is matches the Quaich, The Bay Horse, Findlays, The Corona, and the rest -- but because it is bigger, and more family friendly, Maxwell's is the true heart of Shawlands -- it really is the Village Pub.
It will never be cool, but then again it will never be an old man's pub either..
