A review of Bacco Italia by E. Rodger written on Saturday 18th of April 2009
I've eaten a here a few times, the latest being last night, and overall I'd have to say that while I've never had a bad meal there, I've also never had one that I considered to be delicious, or even particularly tasty!
We also had trouble with our table - they'd got our booking wrong then made a huge deal of trying to get us a table even though half the tables were empty all night.
A muse bouche - something with chilli on toast - was slapped down as soon as we were seated. The pasta dishes are priced about £8 and chicken / meat dishes start from £13. Passable. My cod was bland and overcooked - no sauce. The mash was very nice. The rocket side salad consisted of a small pile of tasteless leaves, no dressing, with one full cherry tomato rolling about on top like Rudolph's nose. My friend enjoyed her chicken cooked in a creamy sauce with potatoes, but nothing special and not worth £13. Our rosemary focaccia was thick and doughy and slightly burnt on one side. Our unused starter cutlery was never cleared from the table.
Atmosphere. I think this place can't make its mind up whether to be a trattoria or a ristorante. The waiters are over friendly, in your face and constantly hanging about trying to refill your glass. The style is of a modern cafe - oh and watch out if you like chilled white wine because they use tumblers instead of stemmed glasses.
Overall, if you're not bothered about value for money I'm sure you'd have a nice evening here, but personally I think you could spend your money in much more pleasant surroundings. .
