A review of Laurie's by Amanda Rough written on Wednesday 8th of December 2010
Was in for dinner on Saturday the fourth of december place does not look much from the outside infact looks like a rough pub all the windows are caged up but noticed a banner saying homemade food.Must admit was suprised upon entering very large establishment which seems to leave the raised up area for dinners which is nicley laid out.My partner and I opted for the table d hote menu which offered a 3 course for £12.95 and to be honest for that price was not expecting much I had steamed west coast mussels in a cider sauce with crusty bread the mussels were cooked to perfection all opened the sauce was great and the bread was possibly home baked the presentation was first class my partner had haggis neeps and tatties with a whisky sauce once again presentation was amazing and he said the dish was the best haggis he had ever had.For main i opted for fillet of salmon which was cooked to perfection still a bit uncooked in the center which is how it should be and only the 2nd time i have came across a chef that can cook fish properly in Glasgow it came with creamed potatoes and these were well seasoned and very smooth the brocolli with it was freshley cooked slightly al dente and very green the lemon and caper sauce was slightly sharp but complimented the dish My partner had a ribeye steak with a roast plum tomato, mushrooms, fried shallots, hancut chips and a blue cheese sauce He had it blue which the very friendly and informative waitress said to me the chef will be pleased he hates anyone waisting a steak by getting it over cooked and i can tall you this steak certainly was not waisted 10 out of 10 he gave it.For pudding we both had home-made bread and butter pudding which was a blast from the past and made me wonder why it was from my past this was amazing and i shall be having it more regular now!the homemade sauce anglaise wa a delight to not to heavy just right. As well as the meal being the best I have had in Glasgow for over a year the entertainment was great to they had a cèilidh on which was great fun and the staff were up dancing and showing the novices how it was done overall I would give this place 9/10 would of been a perfect ten apart from my partner informing me the gents toilets could be doing with a refurb. But i can honestly advise anyone to try the fantastic food here.
