"“Holy Mass” not just “Mass.”"

Dear Editor,

I am writing in connection with a matter which is causing me and many others much consternation and which I feel is easily remedied with a little good will, minimum effort and attention.

There seems to be a growing movement to “dumb down” everything that is religious especially the naming of sacred liturgical ceremonies and actions.

I wonder why?

All Roman Catholic believers should know that the Holy Mass is the “source and summit of the Christian life”, a name we give to the whole liturgical action called the Eucharist.

One practice in the English speaking world which causes me and many others most distress is referring to Holy Mass as merely Mass.

For me to call it “Mass” is lacking due reverence.

Many languages already always refer to “Holy Mass” not just “Mass.”

We all know that the present culture of secularization wants society to avoid reference to and association with everything that is religious, divine or holy.

Or is it just that we too have become unconscious victims of the process of secularization?

Please let us not debase this most holy celebration by merely calling it Mass, a word that can equally mean a large amount of unshapely matter or the abbreviation for an American State (Massachusetts).

It is and always should be, Holy Mass.

Hope this will allow reflection and pondering on the most essential matter in our life – The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass – called Holy Mass.
