A review of Cardonald Primary School by Alan ferguson written on Wednesday 25th of May 2011
I also went to Angus Oval Primary, from 1952, with the dubious honour of having one of my Mother's pals (with the same surname too) as my first teacher there.
Lots of funny wee memories, including the general warning not to go on the Grassy Hill (the shortest route for the Pollok-direction kids) as if the Mafia or Osama Bin-Emptier were there. But in winter ye couldnae stop us and our primitive seldges using the Grassy Hill as the major Alpine Route of Glasgow SW2.
I also remember we kids used to organize the fitba games at playtime and once, every boy in the school was picked for one or t'other team.
We had our outings, but the biggest one was that most of us went to the residential school at Garlieston (Galloway) one October/November for a month of non-urban delight and I remember winning a wee prize there for drawing a tree on Halloween Day. (The end of a successful artistic career, I'm afraid).
And all the teachers were ladies, some great and some fearsome. But it was sad when we were exported to Kirriemuir Ave school and then Cardonald 'proper' for our 11-plus (or whatever it was called then).
I can remember most of the names of my classmates from more than 50 years ago. Can yooz?.
